Project Description

Learn to Sail Program for Beginners

Welcome to the Parkdale Yacht Club Learn to Sail Program for the 2012/13 season.

Our program is designed to run for 14 weeks from November 2012.

The aim of our course is to give participants the confidence and skills to sail a small dinghy around a simple course single handed.

At the completion of our program, participants will have an understanding of:

  • Sailing Theory
  • Rigging
  • Sailing knots
  • Sailing techniques and manoeuvres
  • Rescue procedure and beach safety
  • Respect for the environment
  • Launching and recovery of boats
  • Reading the Weather
  • Boat parts and functions
  • Team Work and friendship

To make our course more enjoyable, most participants will find a sailing bag helpful. It is designed to keep the really useful things in one place and stop young sailors from asking others where they left their stuff.

  • Wetsuit
  • Buoyancy vest (life jacket)
  • Old sneakers (or sailing boots)
  • Bathers and dry towel
  • A change of clothes
  • Hat & Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen & Insect repellent
  • A basic shackle key

The club encourages sunsmart behaviour – it is mandatory that all participants wear a hat and sunscreen when outside. Make sure there is some way to tie the hat onto your clothes so it doesn’t blow away.

If you need to purchase any of the items, please visit the club sponsor OTB (located in Bay Rd. Cheltenham) and let Gavin know that you are from Parkdale Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.

Course

The course runs on Sunday mornings between 9:30 and 11:30am.

Classes will run no matter what the weather – during unpleasant weather an alternative program will take place – sailing theory and beach fun will be the focus if boats cannot be sailed.

An over night sailing camp for all participants is planned for late in the season (March 2013)

The dates for the course are as follows:

  • November 11, 18, 25
  • December 2, 9, 16
  • January 20
  • February 3, 10, 17, 24
  • March 3, 17, 24

Costs

The cost for a single participant is $240 for the season – this includes membership of the club, the club maintenance fee for the use of the club boats and personal insurance covering sailing activities connected with our club.

(If a participant is using their own boat, the cost is $190).

For families with more than one child, please visit the Parkdale Yacht Club website or discuss with one of our friendly committee members the Family Membership rates.

Our club is a family focused club, so as a parent you will be asked to assist with some of the daily activities at the club. The social side of our club is active (and the coffee outstanding) so plan on spending an enjoyable Sunday morning on the beach with your new friends helping your child learn to sail.

Remember that at the London Olympics the Australian sailing team was more successful than the swimming team (and we don’t start training at 5am).

Please sing out if you have any further questions or concerns and register your child’s interest as there are a limited number of places in the program and it is first in first served.

Looking forward to a great season.
